I've been training at JKD NYC for a couple of months now and I can definitely say that it's been a rewarding experience. Even though I was a beginner when I started, Chris and the rest of the team really took the time to make sure I understood what we were learning and its application. What really makes the school standout is the mindset: "is what we're learning effective for actually defending yourself?" Chris really strives to teach what works and you learn what's practical in a fight whether it's knife defense, standing up, or on the ground. Everyone at the school is nice too and are more than willing to stay with you after class to help you out with something you're struggling with. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to learn real self-defense, regardless of skill level, in a friendly, professional environment.
JKD NYC is far the best martial art class I have ever attended, you learn real self defense technique that you can apply in real life. They show you how to defend yourself while standing up or on the ground. The students are friendly and the teachers are very professional. It’s a total judgment free zone where everyone is there to learn and have fun while doing it. You can’t get a technique down? That’s fine, you can stay after class and either one of the teachers or a more experienced student will help. I would recommend this school for anyone who wants to get in shape, learn real practical self defense, or just feel more confident in their daily life.
Such a great class. I wanted to learn not only to box, but self defense too. JKD provided the perfect combination of an all around fitness, martial arts, and self defense program. Since starting I've also dropped a good amount of weight and noticed more lean definition. The classes are welcoming, everyone is friendly, very helpful, and it doesn't even feel like you're working out! You're having so much fun learning that an hour flies by in an instant! I highly recommend. JKD is my #1 fitness spot.
Wish I could give this place and Chris Moran more than 5 Stars.
I’ve trained in many different marital arts in the past and was looking for a place to continue my training when I moved up to NYC. I joined JKD and was immediately hooked. Their approach to self-defense is always practical and Chris seems to always be thinking “does this really work”, which was extremely important to me. I didn’t want to join a gym that only does forms and light drills as this typically does not apply to real world scenarios. In NYC, even if you are the type of person to never pick a fight, you should be prepared for anything to happen and it is important to be capable of defending yourself. JKD NYC will teach you just that. I feel it is a welcoming place for all ages and has a strong sense of community.
Chris truly believes in what he is teaching and will personally dedicate time to every individual student who is dedicated to learning and willing to put the time in. Chris as well as his Senior Instructors are extremely nice and patient, but will always push you to better yourself both in and outside of the gym.
I’ve moved away from NYC and JKD, but will always carry a piece of it with me and appreciate everything Chris has done for me.
I've been training for 2 years with the crew and there is still so much more to learn. We are taught to adapt the skills we learn to the situation presented to us, and we learn to sharpen our judgement of the surroundings. I am more confident and resilient during (unavoidable) confrontation, and I owe this to my training at this martial arts studio!
Whether seeking self preservation or transitioning from sport fighting to dirty combat, JKD-NYC offers a contemporary version of Bruce Lee's JKD.
You will find this entire group from our Sifu Chris Moran, Cam & Johnny down through the different levels of students to be a humble community. Everyone is hands on with each other so you won't feel ignored. But privates are available if you crave more.
There is a great deal of respect here, therefore no one is trying to hurt you. Everyone's path is to connect their mind & body on a deeper level than just reactions. And the dots will connect if you can be patient with yourself. But even if you don't grasp the physical stuff swiftly, you will gain an in depth understanding of situational awareness while in turn developing your self awareness.
You can find yourself training with the likes of actors, surgeons, Law Enforcement, dancers and guys training in MMA at times.
This isn't a fitness trend or sport fighting, fitness gains just happen to be a bonus. There are bonuses like the workshops and outings as well. But you'll have to stick around if you want in on all of that!
I've been training with Chris for about a year and have had an amazing experience. His training is not just practical but rewarding. Best workout ever and I feel more confident with more energy. Seriously the best boxing / mixed martial arts instructor out there
Awesome place for any level! If you're looking to learn self-defense, or if you're the type to simply want to stay fit and keep yourself in good shape, this is the place for you. The classes teach you the discipline of Bruce Lee and fundamentals of effective fighting for both sport and street level, certainly uplifting your confidence than before when walking down the streets of NY. Flexible schedule, excellent staff and students that treat you with respect, making up a comfortable environment to train in. Definitely one of the top self-defense schools in NYC.
Its hard to believe its been 3 years plus that Ive been training at jkd. Coming from no formal self defense background I can say I have learned and grown so much as a fighter and person. Sifu Chris Moran has deep understanding of the varying arts of jkd, and even better he is able to teach and communicate this well to students of all different levels in the same class. What also keeps me coming back is the friendly environment where everyone is eager to learn from one another, in safe no judgment zone. If you are looking for some well rounded skills in the martial arts that touches on everything I highly recommend JKD.
I have been training at JKD NYC for about 2 years now and I have never been to a better school. I have trained in Wing Chun, Karate, and JKD at other schools throughout my life and nothing compares to the kind of hands on/real time training I have acquired from JKD NYC. Chris and his fellow instructors will work with you as an individual no matter what your skill level and you are more then just a student at this school. At JKD NYC you become part of a family that looks out for one another. Martial Arts and especially JKD schools should not just be for the skill of fighting but should also allow you to feel embraced and understood as a human being. JKD NYC will not only give you the best hands on training you have ever experienced but it will give you the mental ability to deal with a vast array of real life situations involving everyday life. IF you are looking for a family of respectful, knowledgable, well trained, and hard working individuals then JKD NYC should be your next and final stop.
Great place to learn how to fight and keep yourself fit in the process. The environment is relaxed, friendly and respectful. You'll find people with varied backgrounds in martial arts and combat sports (all of them without egos). Chris, Cam and Johnny are top notch instructors all of them patient and knowledgeable. The curriculum itself is pretty unique, since in a single class you can go from knife fighting, to grappling, to boxing and even 2 vs 1 sparring. Group and private classes are available.
Have been training for about a year here and I can say Chris and even the other trainers (Johnny, Cam, and even the higher level students who assist with instruction) are the real deal. Martial artists, athletes and casual practitioners will appreciate their flexible, comprehensive,
no BS approach to self-defense. If you're looking for a McDojo that will gift you belts and fool you into believing you're absorbing the art and philosophy of fighting... deff look elsewhere.
Chris and the other instructors are very detailed oriented, and passionate about their work/art. As a very mechanical minded person, I find Chris's approach toward exploring various JKD concepts to be extremely valuable and effective.
All instructors at JKD NYC are highly skilled martial artists who will teach you in a very efficient way and using pragmatic methods, a complete set of tools to reach your martial artist ambitions. Self-defense technics (including knifes), kickboxing, clinch, grappling, trapping, kali stick fighting… will be part of your training sessions. However, the greatest things about this school is in my opinion, how fast you are learning and improving your skills.
I will recommend this school to anyone from novice to very experienced martial artists as you will definitely learn and improve your martial expertise.
Excellent, highly skilled instructors who are interested in your individual progression. Sifu Chris Moran is an exceptional teacher and leader. He knows exactly how to break something down to your skill level and will work with you until you understand how to do it and how to use it. Group classes are a good size. Not large so individual attention is always there. You will not get lost. They will see you, they will pull you aside and make sure you get what you are there for.
-Shared equipment available at no extra cost
-Easy to get to by train
-Good atmosphere. Good people with good attitudes (No big egos...not that Chris wouldn't put them in their place...)
-Diverse students from many backgrounds and many skill levels. Lots to learn!
-Private classes available (small group and one-on-one)
-Very flexible schedules for privates
-gym can get really hot and humid esp in summer
-shared equipment smell...I bring my own but they're there when you need them!
-no morning/afternoon group classes (at the time of this review)
I've trained in different martial arts but something was always missing - only stand up, only ground, only weapons...
But then I found JKD and got hooked. This martial art and specific school combines every possible aspect of fighting - kickboxing, ground jiu- jitsu, wing Chung and locks, weapons both knife and stick, close quarters fighting, street fighting and different simulations of multiple attackers with or without weapons and more...
I also like it since it's not just practicing a punch or kick on a bag or doing a kata but rather real fighting!
It's ok but the place is too small to spar, the techniques are good and but when you try to call they won't answer, there was no receptionist when I was training over there I don't know now but I always had to be emailing or texting the sifu no talk. I'm gonna be fair and give it three outta five good price but needs a little more communication.
JKD was great for me.
The instructors spend time with you and actually work with your form/ technique. The class sizes are just about right. Everyone who attends is very supportive and always willing to help you learn and improve. The atmosphere is serious but also a lot of fun.
I have been regularly attending Chris Moran's JKD classes for over six months and the experience has been amazing. If you are already black belt in some martial art, you will definitely learn new things. If you have no experience and just want to get in shape, the classes will be perfect for you too!
The atmosphere is calm and fun and Chris and his instructors are all extremely helpful and friendly. I highly recommend the group classes and the private lessons have been excellent for honing what I have learned. If you are looking to train martial arts in NYC, definitely try a class! Ten thumbs up!
Training at JKD NYC is a great experience. It's a fun and friendly environment, where everyone is an equal and works together. Sifu Chris Moran and his staff work with you to help you perfect your craft and technique in JKD and Kali. Trained in other martial arts Sifu Chris doesn't let me forget what I know but encourages me to incorporate it in JKD.
I've been here for a year and six months now and with the help of Chris, Evans, Johnney, Cam and the rest of the staff at JKDNYC I feel very confident in my self defence skills. I highly recommend this school because of its proffesion staff, injury prevention and martial arts for the street tactics. Check it out and you won't be disappointed!
After rowing competitively in college, working out just to stay in shape unfortunately did not motivate me. I tried several gyms and eventually really liked fitness boxing. However, 2 years ago when I moved back to NYC after being away for 17 years, I decided it was time to learn a 'real' fighting art, in order to learn skills and feel as if I could protect myself. I can't express how happy I was to have found a place like JKD NYC. Going in, there were 2 things I was worried about. One: since I had never trained in any fighting art, I was worried I wouldn't find a place willing to train raw beginners. Two: being a woman, I was worried about training with men, as they could possibly be annoyed at having to train with a less strong person (I have experienced this in the past). None of this is true at JKD. Every person, no matter the skill level, treats every other person with respect and challenges them to become better. This is of course because the owner, Chris Moran, and the other amazing instructors (Cam and Evan) foster an atmosphere of friendly competitiveness. I have done a mixture of group and personal training sessions - sometimes even having to take a couple of months off because of work conflicts. I am always delighted to return and continue building my skills.
I've lived in New York for 7 years and hadn't found a dojo I liked until I walked into JKD NYC last summer. Seifu Moran emphasizes practical, efficient and effective techniques in his curriculum and there's no obscure philosophy or ritualistic dogma that you have to endure to learn this beautiful art, just good common sense.
And remember to leave your ego at the door. You don't walk into this place to beat up on your fellow students
The idea here seems to be that we all train together to grow together.
This JKD school is freaking awesome! I really enjoy how they teach us martial art with a type of mentality and techniques that is practical in a real street fight. The instructors are really good and they really take their time teaching us! And i really love how we spar in the end of every class. It help us try what we learned in real time, and see what works and what does not work for you.
I started at JKDNYC as a total beginner, and have been going for over a year now. Through their persistant patience and attention to detail, Sifu Chris and his experienced instructors have helped me grow immensely - both physically and mentally. Even I didn't expect to see such an increase of confidence, awareness, stamina, and even calmness in myself when I first began.
All martial arts benefit the body and the mind, but Bruce Lee's focus on diversity and efficiency makes Jeet Kune Do ideal for our modern society. At JKDNYC we learn the core ranges of combat, then work on flowing between them until they become fluid and second nature. To "be like water," as Bruce used to say.
My favorite aspect of JKDNYC is that there are no egos. Everyone is here to become the best version of themselves - and to push you to do the same. We joke often, and laugh a lot, but when it's time work, everyone gives it their all. We improve ourselves through improving each other. What could be more rewarding than that?
JKD NYC is a great place to study JKD. Sifu Chris Moran is extremely knowledgable and eager to share with his students. I really felt that he took the time to get to know me and my personal style and help me improve on areas that I specifically struggled with, while at the same time helping me to grow my strengths. The classes themselves are small enough that you will get individual attention and never feel like just a number in class, but also large enough that there are many different people to work with and learn from. There really is a family atmosphere at JKDNYC with everyone working together to raise each other up. Highly recommended if you're interested in martial arts, self defense, health and fitness, or just meeting good people.
I have been with Sifu Chris and JKD NYC for about 2 years and I can honestly say that the experience has been excellent and transformative. I had a prior background in judo, and work in law enforcement, and I wanted to explore a martial art with a strong striking component that was flexible enough to complement the skills I already had. I have learned more than I ever thought possible and am still learning. It has been an excellent experience that I would recommend to anyone regardless of their skill level or background. Chris, one of the most accomplished JKD practitioners in the New York area and the country, embodies the principles of JKD. An excellent teacher and a martial artist in the true sense of the word, his style of teaching is as unpretentious and results-oriented as the art itself; it is not a show, a contest, or a crisp uniform beauty pageant, the goal is to improve your technique, skills, and attributes to be as effective as humanly possible and have fun along the way. He is patient, thorough, and ensures that his students understand the principles behind the techniques as well as how and when to apply them. From the first class or private lesson it becomes instantly clear that this man knows what he is doing, and if you listen to what he has to say and practice what he shows you, you will be more than able to hold your own in any physical encounter no matter where you started. With the system that Chris teaches, and how he and his staff teach it, you will feel stronger, faster, more balanced and precise in your movements and over time strongly confident in your ability to immediately stop an assailant’s attack dead in its tracks and make the attacker pay for it. He and his staff are relaxed but efficient, skilled yet humble, pretty much exactly what JKD is. You will know it when you see it, and you will enjoy it. And frankly, regardless of what you might look like on the outside, over time you will be someone whom it would be a very, very big mistake to mess with. Fear and uncertainty create danger; if you are confident in your ability to defend yourself, you often won’t have to. You will exude that confidence because you see it in the students and teachers every day you come to class and feel it grow a little stronger every time you leave. You will learn to box, you will learn to kick, you will learn to stop and intercept attacks, to throw and grapple, to lock joints and trap. You will learn to use and defend against a stick, a knife, and multiple attackers. You will learn all of this, and you will learn to do it calmly and efficiently. I didn’t think it was possible when I saw one of the senior staff go through it my first day, but today I know it is possible. And trust me, it’s not only fun, it’s a good feeling to watch your ability to do these things grow and to know you can do it. Attacks on the street just don't seem quite as intimidating when you see them come twice as fast and stop them dead three different ways in class a few times a week. Predators do not want to mess with that level of skill or confidence. Try it out, you won't be sorry.
Chris Moran is simply a great teacher and a great person. You can tell he really cares about his students and follows their progress quietly but diligently. The other trainers are also incredible (both as martial artists and as human beings). The whole experience is amazing for your health and confidence. You get exposure to a wide variety of martial arts, and get a chance to bring different styles together in unique ways. Everyone's supportive, no douchey vibes. Would recommend the gym in a heartbeat.
I have been studying with Chris for a little over two years now and feel incredibly grateful to have found his studio when I did. As a Phase II student, I now have the opportunity to assist the staff in teaching and in doing so I've been able to see just how much time, effort, and care Chris and the other instructors put into making this a studio Bruce would be proud of. Jeet Kune Do has a wide range of possible benefits; from self expression, to exercise, to self empowerment- but first and foremost it is a form of self defense. With that in mind, students start controlled sparring with each other and with the staff from day one. That may sound a little intense, however, because Chris fosters such a supportive environment among the students and staff alike, (largely in part by insisting egos be left at the door) I have never seen anyone leave with a serious injury, or so much as cry in the two years that I have been there. That is no small feat for a martial arts studio. To be clear, if you train here and give it your all you will leave exhausted, you will be sore the next day, and you may have some bruises, but you will be proud of yourself and your classmates and will have entered into a very loving community of people who excited to watch you grow as a martial artist and a person. I highly encourage anyone who is considering trying out martial arts, or continuing their studies, to pay JKD NYC a visit and see for themselves what a great studio it is.
I have been attending PTs (private training sessions) and group classes at JKD NYC for about 2 years and it has been a life-changing experience. As a former gym-rat that got tired of the tediousness of weights and treadmills, picking up a useful, challenging, and interactive program that synthesizes so many functional traditional and modern martial arts techniques, from MMA, to the internal Chinese martial arts, to Filipino weapons traditions, has opened up my horizons to say the least. Chris Moran and the staff at JKD NYC are very helpful and welcoming to students of all levels of skill and fitness. The overall approach to training and learning is a reason I chose this school. Very personable, and no headaches. Well worth your investment and time!
For over a year, I bounced around different fitness/workout places trying out classes and courses. This was the first class that I both enjoyed, and felt like I was truly learning something. I joined and have been going to classes for over a year now. It's an excellent class that teaches you Jeet Kune Do, from the beginner/basic level to advanced. The instructors actually get to know you, and work with you personally. They know what level everyone in the class is, and will plan classes around the people that will be in each class, which is something that I truly appreciate. I cannot recommend this class more, I've learned quite a bit and hope to learn even more in the next few years.
Before I decided to join JKD NYC, I've done allot of research since it was my first time taking any sort of self defense/martial arts class. The reason why I decided to join is, Chris and the other instructors go at your pace and level of comfort, at the same time pushing you to reach your fitness goals. I have been a student for a little less than a year and see vast improvements in my physical abilities and my over all health. Other than learning self defense/martial arts, I am also very happy that I've found a new circle of people that I can also consider friends.
I have been attending classes and private training sessions at JKD NYC for about a year and a half now and all that I can say is that it has been a truly rewarding experience.
Chris is an experienced JKD instructor who will go above and beyond in order to patiently get the material across to the students. And the assistant instructors are great also. No matter how large the class, everyone always receives a great deal of personal attention. As an added bonus, both the classes and private training sessions are incredible workouts. I am in the best shape of my life.
The prices are very reasonable for NYC and the gym is centrally located.
JKD is one of the most effective methods of teaching how to handle yourself in real-life/self defense and street fighting situations because it borrows practical elements from many of the traditional martial art forms, including boxing. I highly recommend this school to anyone wishing to learn JKD.
I have taken various training courses prior to coming to JKD NYC and I can safely say I knew NOTHING before I came to this school. Aside from the fact that they teach you the proper technique, form and skill set one needs in order to advance, the other side is they truly care about their students. Chris Moran and all his trainers tailor the training to what serves the student best. Having previously taken several other classes I know firsthand that this is not always the case. I came to this school with a very specific need and the delivery has been beyond my greatest expectations. I feel fortunate to train with such a knowledgable, caring and FUN group of people. I love this school and highly recommend it to all who want to learn martial arts. Do yourself a favor and make this your first stop!
I started at JKDNYC about a year ago, reaching out to Chris to help me with a specific fight style I had to learn for a movie. Since then, no matter what I"ve requested, whatever style I've come at him with, he done everything he can to accommodate with his team. If there's something they're not 100% familiar with, the team are hungry to learn and go above and beyond to help.
As well as Personal Training, I joined the group classes - the atmosphere is great. There is no hierarchy, I never felt intimidated or out of my depth and there is obviously such admiration and respect for Chris and his team, that this has made it a fantastic club and certainly the best I've been to in NYC.
I started training at JKD NYC in February of 2013 and I've loved it ever since. The classes are fun, engaging and the techniques are effective. A big factor in me staying at JKD NYC is that the classes are some of the most affordable in the city, their was no uniform that I had to buy just a pair of mma gloves; unlike other gyms. It is definitely worth it and I would recommend it to anyone looking for practical self-defense classes that are reasonably priced.
I've been training in NYC for almost a decade at various JKD, Wing Chun and Kali/Escrima schools. From big flashy training facilities to one on one with my
sifu under a tree on the east river. JKDNYC falls in the middle in the best way.
The space is modest, but the instruction and personal attention from Sifu Chris
are stellar. I've actually seen him take notes on particular students and have no
doubt he personalizes each students' direction as a result of this observation. His PFS
brand of JKD is geared towards efficiency and quick results. Besides the usability
of this art, Sifu Chris' delivery is humble and sincere. HIs character sets the example
for a school in which the students help each other along rather than compete with each other. Very refreshing. All are welcome!
After boxing and kickboxing for years, I decided to give JKD NYC a try. I've refined my technique and learned some amazing new skills. Chris Moran is a great teacher - very patient and inspiring! It goes without saying mixed martial arts is a serious workout - it's also a confidence booster to know you can defend yourself. Chris challenges the women as hard as he does the men - so we can hold our own against the guys in class!
I can't stress enough how much I like this place. My friend and I have tried out a lot of different gyms, MMA or otherwise, and none have made me feel so welcome or so productive. Everyone is so NICE! People come up and introduce themselves to you and that has never happened at any other class I've taken. I can really feel the community vibe and it's a great motivator. So my previous MMA "experience" has been every variety of kickboxing, where you just punch a bag or punch the air. JKD is very different- you practice on each other, which is after all, the best way to learn. For the first time I had to develop defense reflexes and block punches. We even learned some basics in weapon combat. I definitely developed some self defense tactics and had a lot of fun boxing with my fellow classmates. Be aware that the room has no windows and is quite smelly upon first entering, but you get used to it quickly and then its just you, your gloves, and a friendly bunch of enthusiastic opponents. Can't wait to return!
JKD NYC is definitely one of the most welcoming gyms I've ever gone to. In just 5 classes I've been able to see and feel improvement thanks to the instructors and fellow classmates that are always there to mentor, assist, and train you so you're at your full potential.
Regardless of how much experience you have in any martial art (my friend and I are two girls who have only done really cardio kickboxing), I can guarantee that you can come here and not only learn the basics of moving, fighting and defending yourself but also hone in on combat skills and even weapons training. The great thing is that you're always working with a partner so it's not just a punching bag where it's so easy to just fall into a pattern.
Currently the studio is located on the fifth floor of a small building in Times Square where there aren't any windows so you might feel like it's a little studio, but the friends you'll make and the skills you learn make it all worth it!
Been a student of JKD NYC for just under a year and I'm completely hooked! It's not a sport like MMA but a amazing are born from the mind of Bruce Lee on the streets of HK. You'll definitely get your work out, the group is absolutely amazing, and we're always eager to work with new students and current students to help improve skills... Did i mention that Sifu Chris is the man?!?
Love training at JKD NYC with Chris. After every class I take I feel stronger than before, he is very patient and goes over technique and application. I recommend both advanced and beginner students in Martial Arts to take the classes. I am very happy to be learning Bruce Lee's style through Chris Moran.
Wasn't sure what to expect when I showed up at the school/studio. When I first walked in all I saw was a room with gear, mirrors, and, a variety of students at all levels. The instructor (Chris) was younger than me and dressed in street-clothes. Sounds cliche - but this was one of those moments where you shouldn't "judge a book by it's cover". Chris Moran is wiser beyond his years and, is not only extremely skilled in JKD but, he really knows how to teach it. He understands the necessary steps for someone (unfamiliar with JKD) to learn and enjoy the art. Chris is what makes JKD NYC great. The students also deserve to be commended in making this school fantastic. The advanced students are very well versed and more than willing to help you improve your practice/experience.
I was a beginner without any understanding or experience with JKD. After almost a year, I'm hooked. The instructor and students make the school a close circle and a family for life. For anyone interested in learning self-defense, JKD, or, even an awesome workout you need to check JKD NYC out.
MMA is not self-defense, it's a sport. On the other hands, Jeet Kune Do was born for street from Bruce Lee. (This is my personal opinion)
This gym is a great workout and self-defense class. For example, elbow throwing, "you need to use your whole body to throw it" Sifu Chris always says that. As you throwing your elbow, you actually workout your core as well. This is just one of the examples. We are doing self-defense movement, at same time, it could be a nice workout as well. No one will stay dry after the class.
I have been done for few years now. By studying under Sifu Chris, he tries to improve the teaching method each year, so that it will be easy for new students to understand the PFS concept.
I feel it is worth it! You should try this out!!
I've been coming here for a few months and have enjoyed it tremendously. I've done other martial arts styles in the past and found JKD to be a good practical mix that you can quickly pick up. At the end of every class I am drenched with sweat after a great workout that mixes in useful parts of boxing, kickboxing, knife fighting, and other styles.
The head instructor, Chris, creates a welcoming atmosphere and just the way he moves shows that he's just on a different level in his training. I also enjoy the remarks he makes that tie in JKD into life outside the dojo.
JKD really teacher you how to apply mix martial arts in real life situations. Chris is an awesome teacher and is able to work with anybody on their level. In each class you will learn new moves and get individualized instruction from Chris or his assistant. It is also an amazing workout!!I
I still remember the first day I walked in the doors of JKD NYC and met Sifu Chris, which was last year January. & when I think back to how confident I was in my abilities then, I realize how over confident I was. 1 year and a half later I see that JKD NYC has changed me for the best. I'm a lot more aware of things than my old confident self and much much much much much much much much much much much much much much more skilled than I ever even thought I was then. Sifu Chris actually takes the time with all of us and we are much more than a number and a student, we are his legacy and his family and he treats us as such. I've progressed so much under his guidance and I'm grateful to have become a part of the JKD NYC family. I see new students come in and I see them progress just as I did and it's a joy to see their progression. If you're experienced or new to martial arts, there's a spot for you. Come in and join the family
It can only take a first free class at jkdnyc , so you 'll get hooked up with art of Jeet Kune Do, The Instructor Chris Moran makes all the tools available to his students in such practical and simple way .
My own experience with Sifu Chris that I remember when I walked in to his class ,it was not much than a curiosity because I kind of felt old , I was 46 ys back then . So being nervous and stiff, Chris came to me and handed a foam stick and start showing me the basic angles and said : just relax , it will all come to you . so after few minutes , I could follow easily the pace of the class , and I felt good about myself ,so I realize it's not the age that matters, but what matters is what do you train? and who trains you?
Here I am now 2 years later becoming somebody else that wasn't 2 years ago.Good stamina, high self confidence , and a fighter that I never imagined I would be.
All I can say that martial art was for me a curiosity that turned to a habit, and habit that turned to a passion. and that's my Experience with Sifu Chris at JKDNYC
Chris is a really gifted teacher, with an obvious commitment to his students and to imparting a genuine understanding of martial arts. He effectively integrates the teaching and practice of core concepts, technique & energy drills, and various kinds of sparring. Learning in his classes starts in minute one and flows naturally from there, a testament to both Jeet Kune Do and Chris.
I could go on and on, but if you're reading this and looking for serious self-defense, martial arts training (whether or not you have experience), or just a new challenge, I highly, highly recommend you come in for a class.
Growing up in Jamaica, Queens was very hard and tough. I always wanted to learn self defense but just never had the time. So when I did, I researched a few different martial arts. I figured Bruce lee is the best fighter in the world so why not take his style which is Jeet Kune Do. So I came across Sifu Chris and had to search no more. After my 1st class I felt that I learned more than I knew about fighting in my whole life. I wasn't flexible, didn't know how to throw a jab, and cross. I was just not where I needed to be as far as being able to protect myself. So I continued to take his class as much as he would allow me to. After a full year with him and with over 50 hrs of private training by him, I can say that I am in the best shape of my life and can now protect me and my family. By just sitting and talking with him you can learn so much. I jus watch him and study him and just so amazed how he can take someone with no experience and fix them up so fast. We have females in our class and they are nothing to play around with. I got my girlfriend to join and she has also been trying to make every class possible. We spar in class with his supervision and this allows us to actually see what will work and what will not work. I love how he allows us to seek answers for ourselves and just allows us to try and explore different things. While making sure we fully understand to use what is useful and to disregard what is not. I wish I would have started years ago but I am 1 year in with him and can't wait to see what I look like in 3-5 years.
I promise after your 1st trial free class, you will also be hooked and ready to become a martial artist.
I have been training under Sifu Chris Moran for about 4mos now and loving every moment of it. I have been learning martial arts and also improving my cardio. I have taken martial arts classes before but was not as impressed by the instructors as much as I am with Sifu Chris. He is very calm and definitely not a show-off. He does a great job at explaining techniques and taking extra time to explain it if you are having issues with it. The classes are small which makes it for more personal attention. By his teaching and demeanor, one can quickly tell that he actually cares about what he is teaching and he is very passionate about it. This is not a McDojo! He is the REAL thing.
I've been studying different Martial Arts on my travels around the world for the past 4 years. What I look for when choosing a place is the quality of the training and the attitude of the people you are training with and learning from. JKD NYC is a fantastic community of real fighters and people passionate about what they are learning. Whether a beginner or advanced the classes and private sessions are fantastic! There are people from all walks of life, learning different things for different reasons and everyone has a place there. If you want to be pushed forward as a better fighter or simply want to gain confidence in self defence then I can't recommend a better community to learn with.
I've been a student of JKD NYC for about a year and a half and still counting baby:) and even when there are times when I had to be absent whether it be a week or two or a couple months it still amazes me that I can come back with the same strength, energy and stamina like I never left and that's just one of the many rewarding experiences that I've gained learning mixed martial arts and women's self defense with Chris, it's still surreal for me at times to witness my own power and strength that I never thought existed come out especially since I'm a pretty petite girl and more so have it work in my favor to take on the opposite sex in training whom a lot of times are much bigger and taller than me and it feels great especially being that there is such a misconception in today's world that smaller is weaker, well you will certainly come out singing a different song learning and enforcing such amazing techniques working with Chris and the many rewarding benefits that all his programs have to offer.
Hey but you don't have to take my word for it come get a TASTE for yourself and maybe you will get some of it from me:)
