Group Training

For the last year I have been doing Group Training classes with Johnny. I am 65 years old and I am determined to stay strong and healthy as I age. By working with our Team trainer Johnny Gillespie 3 times a week, I am building and maintaining the strength and endurance I need to remain active and healthy in my retirement years.

Training with a small group with a professional fitness trainer makes a big difference making my workouts much more productive than just exercising alone.

Every session is personally designed by Johnny to continue to help each group member build strength and endurance over time. Our group is small, 4-6 people, so we get a lot of support and guidance from Johnny in each session. It is fun to train with a variety of people of different ages and fitness goals. We all have one thing in common, staying fit and supporting each other to get through Johnny’s tough workouts.

I have found that when I go to the gym and workout alone, I never seem to push myself as far as I can go with group training or with one-on- one sessions with a trainer. In our Group Training Class, Johnny designs a workout that makes us sweat, grunt, and whine and you feel pretty exhausted after each session. But, you know that each workout took you to your limit and that you will recover stronger and healthier.

We start each work out with a warm up of about five minutes. Johnny will have us run the hall, do air squats, TRX Rows or body movements like lunges or the dreaded inchworm.

After our warm-up we have two, timed circuits of exercises, usually one for strength and one for endurance. In our 20-minute strength session we will work with weights to do 8-12 reps each of a series of exercises repeated 4-5 times. Johnny makes the rounds with each of us to train and guide us in keeping the right position for each exercise.

After a five-minute rest, we start a second circuit of exercises doing AMRAP or “As Many Reps As Possible”. That last set can be the toughest and towardthe end of the 15 minutes I am dragging and wasted. It’s a great feeling to finish the set and to see how all of our team members encourage each other to succeed. Small group training is fun and makes a real difference in my personal fitness quest. I look forward to each class and hate when I have to miss one.

But the real difference comes from a professional trainer like Johnny who gets to know each of us as individuals and guides us around our personal limitations, aches, pains, injuries and mental barriers to exercise. Johnny has taken several certification and nutrition courses and shares his knowledge of physiology and exercise technique with every member of our group.

Group Training

My name is Kim and I am 61. First I want to start off saying I do have a health challenge – Rheumatoid Arthritis – however I have never let that stop me from working out. I began the Group Training class on the first day it was offered in March 2015. Why did I start? I had been working out consistently for a long time with a trainer, on my own and attending Spin classes; although I was seeing improvements in my appearance/strength/endurance, I felt I needed to step it up a notch. (When working out alone I found I just wasn’t pushing myself to my max and I was not seeing the results as quickly as I wanted).

What were my initial goals? Lose weight, inches and body fat – blah, blah, blah. I pretty much knew what I was getting into when I joined the class however I did not foresee the changes I would see in my appearance, strength, endurance and fat loss!! Bernie summed up how the class works and how we all support and motivate each other, so I thought I would let you know the benefits I have experienced with consistent workouts:
 Within the first 3 months my endurance and stamina began increasing
 With consistency, I saw that I was adding more weight to my dumbbells/barbells and I was able
to complete a workout routine without feeling like I was going to keel over
 I lost inches and my body fat decreased. Although my weight has stayed the same I have
dropped two pant sizes
 I stand taller. My back is straighter because the muscles in my back are strong and they pull my
shoulders back.
 My grip strength has improved. I am able to hold things tighter and don’t drop items
 My reflexes have improved
 I am more stable when I am standing/walking. My whole body feels stronger and evenly
balanced.
 Endurance and Stamina continue to increase. I am able to push through workouts and recover
quicker
 I am less injury prone
 I can eat more and stay the same weight – plus if I splurge every once in awhile I don’t feel guilty
 There are other benefits, as well, but I don’t have room to list those
The workouts are hard and challenging! I am not going to sugarcoat it and say I love working out. Some
days I dread it and have to force myself to come. 
However, walking in the front door of the gym is the hard part. Once I am with my workout buddies I know we are all in it together and am happy I came.
And….when the 50 minutes is over I may be exhausted but I have an exhilarating feeling of accomplishing a major challenge.

My advice is if you truly want to improve your physical appearance, health and well being you need to be consistent with your exercise, challenge yourself and work to your maximum. The Group Training Class will give you all of that. Strengthening my overall physical condition

I am 66 years old and had never gone through a physical training program until I started training with Johnny Gillespie this past April. Johnny designed a specific training program to work on strengthening my overall physical conditioning, emphasizing my mobility, general stamina and, specifically range of motion and strength of my shoulders which require attention due to several surgeries. Johnny also designed a nutrition plan intended to supply me with the protein needed to build a stronger body.
As a Master Trainer, I have found Johnny to be knowledgeable in the physical training field. But equally as important is his evident concern with my progress. training under his supervision has increased my overall strength, improved my mobility, and has made me feel many years younger. I recommend Johnny without reservation to anyone seeking to improve his or her physical condition.

Competing in a bodybuilding competition

In 2010 I began lifting weights with one thing in mind, competing in a bodybuilding competition. When I began, I mostly did whatever exercises I saw other people do or what I read in books or magazines. It wasn't until late 2012 that I hired a personal trainer, and began working with Johnny. The progress that I've made since has been more in such a short period of time than I made during the two years Prior. I finally competed at the 2013 West Coast Classic and placed third in the Lightweight Novice Division in late June. If you are on the fence about getting a personal trainer, I recommend you give Johnny a shot!

Personal Training Success Story

I was 191 lbs in January 2012. Since starting personal training and being held accountable to change my diet, I have lost 24 pounds and 4 inches are gone from my waist.
I still train 2-3 times a week and have maintained a low carbohydrate, high protein diet. I just turned 62 in January and am in the best shape I have been in for more than 20 years. My trainer Johnny keeps my workouts fun and challenging, helping me to build and improve my flexibility.
