From non swimmer to GB Age Group

Sam has taught me everything I know about triathlon and cycling, in fact he advised me on my very first road bike!

From a pretty humble starting point of not swimming since high school and a stark realisation that I couldn't actually do it at all anymore, Sam has helped me develop my technique to a point where I am now comfortable around 1:45/100m.

Since then he has worked with me from just completing a middle distance race to several top 10 Age Group positions at 70.3 level. Most recently I was in the position of having to wait for the roll down ceremony and narrowly missed out on a Worlds slot! In a short number of years Sam has helped me go from non swimmer to GB Age Group member looking for a good result at the 1028 ETU Middle Distance Championships.

I was fully prepared

Devon Coast to Coast Ultra Marathon (117miles) winner in 26hrs 14min. Set a new course record for both Two Moors Way and Devon Coast To Coast.

The Podium Addict team were of tremendous help to me when I set out to tackle this event. Several months worth of consultations on race equipment, shoe testing, nutrition and pacing meant I was fully prepared when the start gun went off.

Give it a go and you won’t be disappointed.

I fell into triathlon completely by accident; I was in a sedentary desk job and, after the birth of my two kids, had stopped prioritising any exercise at all.  It is fair to say that my get up and go had gone long ago and my confidence was at an all-time low.  I went out to watch Sam and my brother complete the IM Barcelona in October 2016 and watched lots of very normal people achieve something really special.  The moment I realised I needed to have a word with myself was watching a 76-year-old man compete – How could I keep making excuses to explain how unfit I was?!?!

After a few beers that night I woke up the next morning having agreed to race a 70.3 in Stafford in June 2017. Just to explain how bonkers this was – I could only swim two lengths of a pool without drowning, I had never cycled further than 25 miles and I have never voluntarily run more than 5 miles in one go.  I had a lot of work to do.

Sam was a huge help on the side with very positive encouragement through the good times and the very low times and I successfully finished the 70.3 and had caught the bug.

I will never set the world on fire when it comes to triathlon but I can achieve much more than I ever believed.  After Stafford I immediately signed up for a repeat in 2018, this time I wanted to use Sam’s experience and signed up for a training programme with Podium Addict to see how much better I could do.  I realised very quickly that I had only “played” at training the year before and with proper planning, and personal tailoring of my programme, training could be hugely enjoyable as well as rewarding.

Every session gets feedback which then influences future sessions. I work in a job that is very hours hungry and these change from day to day which makes planning my training really hard work.  Podium Addict coaches have shown me just how flexible and understanding they can be and they enable my programme to work around my job and two beautiful children who have priority for my spare time.

Podium Addict is not just about the training programme; it is also about the supportive, enthusiastic and inclusive environment that the coaches provide for all the athletes.  The use of social media to bring all of the Podium Addict athletes together and let us share our stories and pictures along the way, helps us all push ourselves that little bit harder.  I can’t recommend Podium Addict enough if you are thinking about taking the next step in your triathlon career.  Give it a go and you won’t be disappointed.

I did it!

I decided to sign up for a 70.3 as a personal challenge after watching friends and family compete over the last few years. I had always been inspired by anyone brave enough to take on such a challenge but never thought I had it in me, so I did it.........

I signed up to the Ironman Puerto Rico 70.3 as an adventure....I then realised I needed some serious help with swimming! Sam has been fantastic ever since I first approached him about coaching. Not only has he helped with the fear of distance swimming but he has also improved my technique and I've found a new love for swimming. My original goal was to just complete the 1.2 mile swim but Sam guaranteed that I would be out of the water well under and hour and I am proud to say it was 44 minutes!

I have since decided to follow a full training plan by Sam at Podium Addict as his knowledge, motivation and advice has not only improved me as an athlete but also given me more confidence in all aspects of life. I look forward to every week and I am training hard for my next challenge.
